What is CGAP™?
CGAP™ is a specialty certification designed for and by public-sector internal auditing practitioners. The exam tests a candidate's knowledge of the unique features of public-sector internal auditing - fund accounting, grants, legislative oversight, confidentiality rights, and more. The program's broad scope emphasises the internal auditor's role in strengthening accountability to the public and improving government services.

The CGAP™ exams is available on a year-round basis.

Workload
It is recommended that candidates set aside approximately 60 to 80 hours of study for the exam, over a minimum of a three month period.

Computer Based Testing
The CGAP™ exam is available through computer-based testing, allowing you to test year-round at more than 500 locations worldwide. Candidates are able to sit for exams at any IIA-authorised Pearson VUE testing center worldwide, regardless of whether the testing centre is located in your hometown or country.

Eligibility
Candidates in the CGAP™ program agree to accept the conditions of the program, including eligibility requirements, exam confidentiality, Code of Ethics, and Continuing Professional Education (CPE), along with other conditions enacted by The IIA's Professional Certification Board (PCB).

Requirements
CGAP™ candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements for education, character, work experience, and identification. Before a candidate application can be approved, ALL documentation (proof of education, character reference, and identification) must be received and approved by The IIA’s Certification staff.

Education
CGAP™ candidate must have CGAP candidates must hold a 3 or 4 year post-secondary degree (or higher).

Important change to the Education Requirement for the CGAP
The Global Board of Directors has approved an alternate path to eligibility for the CGAP for those candidates who do not possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
 
In order to apply for this alternate pathway please complete Education Requirement Exception Form and email it back to the education team for assessment. Please note this form is for CIA, however it can be used for CGAP until the proper form becomes available.

Work Experience
CGAP™ candidates must acquire two years of auditing experience in a government environment (federal, state/provincial, local, quasi-governmental areas, authority/crown corporation). A completed Experience Verification Form is required.

Candidates may apply to the program and sit for the exam prior to satisfying the professional experience requirement, but will not be certified until all program requirements have been met.

Character Reference
Candidates must exhibit high moral and professional character and must submit a Character Reference Form signed by a CIA, CGAP, CCSA, CFSA, CRMA, or the candidate's supervisor.

Proof of Identification (new changes as of 1 April 2014)
Candidates must provide proof of identification in the form of a copy of the candidate’s official passport or driving license. These must indicate current status; expired documents will not be accepted.

Pearson VUE Testing Center Eyeglass Policy Change (new changes as of 25 February 2015)

Currently, eyeglasses are allowed in the testing room following visual inspection to ensure security.

Visual inspection is defined as, "examining the item without directly touching it and without asking the candidate to remove the item."

The eyeglass inspection process will change so that test administrators (TAs) will ask every candidate wearing glasses to remove the glasses and show them (not hand them over) to the TA for better viewing. For legal and liability reasons, TAs will not be allowed to touch the glasses, even if a candidate offers.

Eligibility Period
Effective November 2010, the certification program’s eligibility requires candidates to complete the program certification process within four years of application approval. If a candidate has not completed the certification process within four years, all fees and exam parts will be forfeited.

Confidentiality
The  CGAP™ exam is a non-disclosed examination. Candidates in the program agree to keep the contents of the exam confidential and therefore may not discuss the specific exam content with anyone except The IIA's Certification Department. Unauthorised disclosure of exam material will be considered a breach of the Code of Ethics and could result in disqualification of the candidate or other appropriate censure.

Code of Ethics
A candidate agrees to abide by the Code of Ethics established by the Institute.

Continuing Professional Education
Upon certification, a candidate is required to maintain their knowledge and skills and stay abreast of improvements and current developments.
